A top athlete in the U.S. earns millions of dollars. Basketball superstar LeBron James makes $47million per year plus millions more per year in endorsements. In 2021, soccer star Christiano Ronaldo earned a whopping $260 million in 2021! Contrast that with the average (median) salary of a high school algebra teacher which is only $63,000 in the Carolinas. The math teachers are obviously more important to society. So the obvious question is why are math teachers paid so much less than pro athletes?
