A train conductor sees a passenger holding a newspaper who is trying to board a crowded subway car. The conductor pushes the passenger into the subway car's door causing the newspaper to fall to the subway platform. Fireworks that had been concealed in the newspaper explode when they hit the platform. Mrs. Palsgraf, who is standing at the other end of the platform, is struck by a scale that falls on her as a result of a resulting shock wave.
