Angela Peters a 23 year old white woman has been married for 2.5 years and has an 18 month old little girl. She was diagnosed with cocaine use disorder and major depressive disorder. Angela underwent a series of screening and assessment appointments with a variety of professionals. Angela was still more worried about losing Megan and figuring out what to do with her volatile marriage than she was about addressing her cocaine use. But as she completed forms and engaged in interviews, she began to reflect on how much time in a typical day she spends thinking about cocaine, making plans to buy cocaine, experiencing cravings, using cocaine, and feeling ashamed about her cocaine use. The more she thought about it, the more she realized how much she resented this dominant role that cocaine use played in her life. And she especially hated how stuck and helpless she has felt when she has attempted to cut

back. Angela found herself benefiting more from the screening and assessment process than she had anticipated. Most members of the interdisciplinary team were consistently kind and supportive. Angela felt heard when she discussed her complicated feelings about her marriage. She gained insight from the thoughtful questions the professionals asked her. She felt encouraged when they affirmed her desire to maintain custody of Megan and to get healthier so that she could be the best possible mother to her daughter. And most of all, she felt supported by their comments that they believed she would be successful and that they intended to help. Angela met with the interdisciplinary team. The team assured her that they understood that she was a mother of a toddler and needed support that could accommodate her and her child. The social worker confirmed that they could offer treatment and resources that would meet the full range of her needs and invited Angela to participate in developing a treatment plan. Angela decided she was ready to give treatment a try.
