A typical oilfield has been estimated to have a reserve of about one billion barrels of crude oil with expected daily production of 50,000 barrels of oil per day during the first phase. The preliminary well flow characteristics show water cut of 15% (percentage water in the well flow), gas to oil ratio of 300 SCF/STBO, oil gravity of 32 API, gas specific gravity of 0.65 and water specific gravity of 1.07. Three stage separators are required to allow the controlled separation of volatile components. The first stage separator with inlet fluid temperature of 120 oC is required to reduce the well pressure to 4MPa under fluid retention time of 5 minutes to allow gas to bubble out, water to settle at the bottom and oil to be taken out in the middle having water cut reduced to 5%. In the second stage separator, the pressure is reduced to around 1 MPa and temperature of 75 C. The water content is to be reduced to 1.5%. The final separator is a two-phase separator, flash drum. The pressure is be reduced to atmospheric pressure of 100 kPa, so that the last heavy gas components can boil out. As a process Engineer, develop a process plant to handle the well flow stream with detailed flowsheet, material and energy balances, equipment design/specifications, geometry and layout (orientation) and the cost implication of the facility.
