A usual clich in accounting practice is that Cash is the King meaning that investors should fixate on cash flows rather than earnings. However, previous research has shown that contrary to the above belief investors overreact to the accrual component of earnings, despite their lower persistence in relation to the cash flow component. Critically discuss the advantages and disadvantages of fixating on cash flows rather than earnings in financial analysis.
