A very important topic in social psychology is prejudice, and ongoing events the United States and beyond bring attention to issues of deep historic inequity and injustice that should not be ignored. While we know that genetics plays a crucial role in a person's potential of what they will become, prejudices are learned and structured ("build in") into societies. These are not comfortable topics to discuss, but how a society is structured--access, what you have to think and worry about, opportunity--has an impact on what a person may become. It is therefore very relevant to psychology, and an important beginning point if we want to use our understandings to move society and our world to one of greater equality, justice and peace. For this assignment, please, as always, be candid and honest, open and respectful. Note that we are all prejudice in some ways and against some groups of people--it is simply a result of being socialized, of being a social creature. That doesn't make it okay, but it makes it understandable. As we expand our understandings of the influences that give us our viewpoints and statuses we gain power to adjust both. We can't do anything about our genetics or the conditions into which we are bornthose are simply inherited. But we can develop not only more control over what we are making ourselves into--what we know, believe and can do--but also how we impact our world--what we do to shape society. For this Assignment, please view the following video that highlights some conditions of privilege that shape a person's life, but over which they have no control: Please describe at least 2 of the most prominent characteristics that you inherited or were born, and describe the social advantages and disadvantages that you "got" along with them in mainstream America. Also, please contrast your characteristics with those of a family member, friend or acquaintance that had quite a different "starting line"a different set of characteristics. If you have a story, please tell it in a paragraph. In a final short statement, please state how looking at race and other characteristics from as "unearned" or "a lottery" might be useful for increasing social justice for groups historically prejudiced against. Again note: The circumstances into which a person is born are entirely out of their control. For example and as mentioned, we have no control over our inherited genetics or the culture we are born within. And yet such arbitrary factors obviously and powerfully shape what we eventually become, much simply due to how the society we are born into is structured and what it gives value to. For example, I am a white, heterosexual male--3 characteristics that have given me advantages and access to opportunities that I would not have had the same access to were I born a Latina lesbian. Not fair at all, but this is how our world is set up. For now. Societies can and do change, but typically quite slowly. And such change requires persistence and pressure.
