a) What is wrong with these people! They are all talking about who will be the "murderer" and who will be the "victim" in this stupid party. You, on the other hand, are really wondering about the other bags: what is the expected value of the bag you will be choosing? b) The bags have arrived. One of the guests, Preeti Patel, a friendly woman who was sitting at your table, rushes to grab one, opens it, dumps the contents on the table, and storms out muttering "The real Mysore is a lot nicer than this!". You notice that all there is on the table is a beach towel and sun screen: no special instructions, no money. Now that you've seen the contents of her bag, what is the expected value of the bag you will be choosing? Explain your answers. When you first received an "invitation" from famous billionaire "Ebon Lezos" for a short "murder mystery holiday" on his "private Greek island", you had a good laugh before throwing it in the recycling. Yeah, right! But then the "confirmation" calls kept on coming, even though you kept hanging up. Then you called the airline yourself, and they did confirm that the "first class" open Toronto-Athens return ticket you retrieved from the recycling bin was indeed real. Well... you had always wanted to visit Greece.... you happened to be free... so you packed your bags, looked up some hostels, and left for Athens. Those first ten days in Greece sure were fun! But still intriguing: the flight was real, what about the rest of the trip? The invitation said that you could board the "yacht" on the Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday before the murder mystery weekend, so you showed up at the port on Tuesday at the departure time to see what this was all about. You saw a bunch of very rich people boarding a magnificent ship! You returned the next day: more rich people boarding the same ship! But you didn't feel like you would fit in: a quick shopping spree was in order! Fortunately, unlike back home, in Greece you can buy Rolex watches and Louis Vuitton accessories at decent prices. People sell them outdoors on blankets next to the Parthenon and the Acropolis, which is very convenient for tourists like you. You were completely ready in time for the Thursday sailing. The boat trip was glorious; the island is beautiful; and your digs at Mysore are amazing! But you are feeling somewhat uncomfortable: First, the other guests are from all over the world, and you are definitely the only Canadian there. Fortunately everybody speaks English, so you have managed to meet all the guests (some of these people are quite famous!) But the introductions have been rather strange: nobody is surprised when you give your name even though you have obviously never met, and some seem to be very happy to "finally meet you" and really seem to want to spend more time with you; it's only been one day, and you've already received invitations to five places that are supposedly much better than here. But even with all that friendliness and in spite of your last minute purchases in Athens, you still don't feel like you are fitting in. You have no idea what these people are talking about most of the time. And when you try to participate in conversations, the others will often stare at you, or somebody will laugh, slap you on the back, and say something like "good one!" It is now Saturday morning and you having breakfast at Mysore with the nine other people who are also staying there. Your host Ebon Lezos (weird guy!) shows up and explains the murder mystery party: he has invited fifty billionnaires to his island for the weekend. Ten guests are staying in each of his five mansions: Alhambra, Buckingham, Mysore, Topkapi, and Versailles. This morning, fifty gift bags were prepared for the guests: one also contains instructions for the person who will act the part of "the murderer", another one instructions for the person who will act the part of "the victim", a third one a million dollars, three more $100K each, and five more $10K each. Ten of these fifty bags will soon be delivered to the breakfast room of each mansion, where each guest will pick one.
