a) What was the situation?
I once hired an Image Consultant to help me update my wardrobe. I decided I wanted to work with a professional because, as a rather minimalist, old-fashioned, low-maintenance guy, clothes shopping was / is something I find to be a chore. I would take probably any stereotypical-guy activity over going shopping. So working with someone else who was passionate and informed about style and fashion made sense.
b) Describe how you made the estimate. Discuss your reasoning for estimating the duration of the activity the way you did.
Due to what could probably be attributed to inexperience doing alot of shopping, I underestimated how long it would take to sort through and assess all the options the consultant laid out for me. She was an efficient professional, had a systematic approach to what she did, the thing that cost the most time was probably me. As someone who, again, doesn't really care for or have an "eye" for fashion, it was a process to determine what I really liked. What I felt I could identify with. So our shopping sessions took a few more hours than I anticipated.
c) In what way was it inaccurate? Discuss the factors that caused your estimate to be inaccurate.
I underestimated how long shopping sessions would take. On the days we met, we would spend a few hours longer than I would have expected trying things on, talking about what I liked and why, what I wanted more or less of. It was a process. The factors that attributed to my inaccurate estimate include:
limited experience shopping
a certain degree of uncertainty about what look I was going for (I know more about what I dislike than what I like)
not quite being on the same page with the consultant (not sure we were the right fit)
d) What was the outcome of the situation?
I did manage to get some outfits that I like, certainly better quality than what I would usually buy. Working with a professional, I went into it intending for it to be a learning experience as much as a shopping experience. She seemed to know a good deal of things that I never would have considered, and for that, I was very appreciative of our time together. All that said, she was paid hourly, and the outcome of that meant that she was expensive. Good times.
e) What were the consequences of the inaccuracy?
The shopping sessions not only took longer, but they cost more. To say there were "consequences" seems like a harsh way of putting it. It was a worthwhile experience that didn't go exactly as expected, but all things considered, it was still beneficial.
