A window is in the shape of a semielliptical arch. The window is22inches tall at its highest point and70inches wide at the bottom.
(a) Find the height of the window8inches from the center of the base.
(b) Find the height of the window8inches from the outside edge of the base.
I think I am supposed to assume that the center is at (0,0) as well. I have drawn the arch and labeled it, but I am confused as to how I should approach each part. I know that it must be a horizontal ellipse, and that the formula to be used should be (x-h)^2/a^2 + (y-k)^2/b^2. I also got that a=35 and b=22. Then, I calculated c and got the square root of 1709. I am just stuck. I wasn't sure if 8 inches from the center was indicating the use of point (0,8) or (0,-14). Also, for the width I was unsure of what point to use, maybe (8,0). Please help!
