Abel Weekend, Hanna Riri and Michelle Jackson are students living in Purple Rainier Residence Hall, at Centennial College. The residence was established in 1999 as a co-ed dormitory and is located over the hills, near The Business School. Hanna and Michelle (both female) are roommates, and Abel (male) has a room next to theirs. There have been some problems among them about what is an acceptable level of activity and noises after hours. Hanna and Michelle hold frequent meetings in their room. Their crew love to shine blinding lights in your eyes, play wicked games, and are often loud as a hurricane in the night, rockin' like party monsters, when their meetings take place. Last week, Abel and some of his friends called the campus police because Abel found it difficult to concentrate because of a meeting held in Hanna and Michelle's room. After the Campus Police told the two to "keep it down" Hanna, Michelle, and their guests angrily confronted Abel in his room. There were accusations exchanged. The head of the residence was alerted, and after an hour, she was able to quiet things down. Since this has been an ongoing problem, Prince Artist, the residence manager referred the students to mediation.

Abel Info

You have to work 20 hours a week and carry a full academic load, so you really need a quiet environment to live for. You have a scholarship, so you need to maintain a 4.0 GPA. You earned it through your hard work and would die for it, because your family struggled so you can go from Scarborough to the world. This was so important that you were willing to even be in a dorm where you did not know anyone just so you could work in peace and quiet. Sadly, you ended up next to Hanna and Michelle, who are very active in student politics and their room is often a hub of activity. People come from inside and outside the dorm for frequent meetings. It is difficult to concentrate because the meetings often become very heated and since you are nocturnal, like a moth to a flame, you get lost in the fire and can't fall asleep nor can you study effectively. Three weeks ago, you left a reminder note asking them to move their meetings to the dorm lounge, but nothing changed. Last week, you had a very big test coming up and really needed to concentrate. Again, there was a meeting, and you could feel it coming, that feeling where you can't even feel your face, with all the chatter, it was so impossible to focus on your studies and you just want the noise to be over now because the upcoming test is the important one right now. The senior resident and Prince, the residence manager, were both out, so you called some friends to come over to study. Your friend Andrew Tater said "these people have no right to use their room for meetings. They have plenty of other places, like the Women's Centre, which belongs to the world of Centennial students. Besides, dorms are for living and studying, not plotting a feminist revolution." You were so exhausted you agreed to call Campus Police and complain. You heard the police arrive, and after they left, Michelle and Hanna were pounding on your door, calling out your name, asking you what your "problem" was, and accusing you of making up a lie, claiming that you might not be telling the truth, because you are just a lowlife, harassing them. You were so angry that you showed them the reminder to "Remember you should check your privilege and be professional" and told them they "better believe you are not going to wait till you turn 28 to graduate, so they should save their tears because power is power, and noise is noise." Prince did show up, with whipped cream, perhaps delirious, and threatening to use it on all of you. Somehow this "let's go crazy" mentality calmed the situation down. He suggested you all go to mediation to sort it out because peace and harmony between you and them will be "when doves cry".

You have been very active in campus politics, often holding meetings and gatherings in your room to discuss issues facing women students, talk that talk, labelling yourselves as the "Bad Girls," an umbrella organization of the Canadian Women's Support Network, launched by your mentor, Billie Jean Ben. This organization helps women realize they are the most beautiful girls in the world and not the only girls in the world going through these difficult times and you wonder where have they been all your lives. Their mission statement is: "Te amo right now, what now, you the one, woman up, man down!" You find these meetings an exhilarating thriller, believe you found love and passion, as it lifts you up, and is a great opportunity to develop and carry out effective action to ensure a fair and equitable studying and working environment. You acknowledge that after the meetings finish, members don't stop till they get enough, stay, and want to rock with you two. You don't want to be starting something, but have no choice but to pour it up, say cheers, and enjoy some birthday cake to celebrate and perhaps it's really loud for just 45 seconds or so, since your friend Diana Dirty has a loud laugh and the sound bounces off the wall. Up until Abel moved in next door, you have had no complaints from any of the other residents. You hardly ever see Abel and the first contact you had with him was a note on your door asking you to hold your meetings elsewhere. You thought he was a rude boy, and decided that until Abel came to speak to you, it wasn't an SOS, and you wouldn't stop the music and break it off, because he wasn't being disturbia'd. Last week, during one of your meetings, it was déjà vu, upon the replay again, as you remember the time the Campus Police last screamed and shouted at the women's group. This time, the Campus Police came to the door to say they had received a complaint about the noise and asked the group to "keep it down." You were furious. You were treated like smooth criminals. Why didn't Abel come and ask you about it. Instead, the cops were sent to quiet you down, men using force to oppress women. You decided it was time to have a talk and stormed over the Abel' room and confronted him and his company. You were angry about the way you make me feel and asked him why he would not deal with you directly, and to look at the man in the mirror and ask why he harassed you with the cops? Soon, Prince arrived and calmed everyone down, reminding everyone that until 7 AM, you are not alone in the dormitory and the thieves in the temple here are speaking at noise levels that are now dangerously high and he is trying to heal the world and doesn't want to be handing out diamonds and pearls to get everyone to calm down. He suggested you try to work out your problems at the mediation centre because it will be "purple rain" before you and Abel sort things out. You reluctantly agree. You suspect that Abel is an unfaithful campus conservative, trying to suppress your rights of free speech and assembly and want him to just beat it, shut up and drive him out of his dorm. You will not wait your turn and stand for this and are not afraid to tell him so, saying that you will dominate him like it's BDS&M, while chanting "what's my name?".you are Michelle and Hanna. On what points can you negotiate with Abel?
