Abu is an 80 year old gentleman of South Asian descent. He has very limited command of English as he has just recently migrated to the UK as dependent of his children. He is admitted to A&E after having a fainting spell that resulted in a minor head trauma. During the scans, it revealed that Abu appears to have widespread cancer growth on his colon. Whilst admitted, Abu's wife and five children regularly come to see and stay with him. All of his children are now adults. Farhan, the oldest child lives with his parents and looks after the care of both Abu and his wife. During the hospital stay, the nurses have realised that Abu suffers from intermittent loss of mental capacity indicative of dementia. The lead consultant Dr Pompeo and Ellen, the cancer specialist nurse wanted to speak to Abu about his diagnosis. Farhan demands that the healthcare team only speaks to him first because of his parent's language ability and worried that information will confuse and distress the them.
