According to philosopher Thomas Hobbes a social contract is a contract between the ruled and the ruler (s), where individuals have defined rights and duties upon the conditions of the contract. Influencing certain moral codes in exchange, for security, survival, education and other necessities needed to live. However, the concept of the social contract has since evolved between organizations and employees.

One example of how social contract is steadily evolving, employers expect that new and existing employees are knowledgeable with the necessary skill set to perform assigned responsibilities. Most employers are now guiding employees to find ways of improving existing skills as they relate to the needs of the company. This is different from the past when employers provided "on the job training" to help build specific skills. Consequently, security in employment has become extremely unpredictable due to the nature of businesses.

Human resource managers are now implicating the use of technology as a training tool. People take in information differently. Providing a variety of learning options such as written, audio, and video in an effective way helps to improve the learning needs of personnel. The use of technology makes training more accessible and relatable to everyone's learning style.

The new social contract favors the person, in this case, the employee. Job satisfaction is a key element for most companies. Working for a purpose within an organization with a set of defined values with honest communication and feedback can make a meaningful difference in organizations. People now need to believe in the company's vision, mission, and goals. They can now choose to be associated with a company that trusts them and can contribute to their individual career growth with added responsibility. Managers are learning to treat their employees as their biggest asset. By providing rewards, incentives, appreciation, training opportunities and encouraging employees to learn new skills by taking on new challenges. Pressing human resource managers to think more positively about the benefits and accommodation given to employees.
