According to what you have learned thus far, list and explain in cognitive psychology terminology, which aspects of driving a car are automaticand which parts are (or at least should be)controlled?

  • Once we have driven for years, many aspects of driving become automatic;therefore, to break the driving process backdown to its constituent elements, think about what a new driver must attend to when learning to drive.

3)Consider this:

"The state legislature is passing a new law that will ban the driver's use of ALL electronic devices while driving."

  • For now, I want you to carefully consider the issue, and find support (from cognitive psychology) to build your argument.

4)Statewhether you arePRO(think congress should pass the law) orCON(think congress should not pass the law). You cannot choose the middle ground, you MUST choose PRO or CON.

5) Now,applying at least 2 concepts from cognitive psychology and your textbook that you have learned in class so far, support your choice.

  • Make sure your answer conveys a solid understanding and substantive application of the principle/theory/construct.

6) Find and readONE recent, scientific, empirical journal article that further supports your argument. Your research must have been published within the last 5 years.

  • be sureyour evidence is empirical (conclusions are drawn directly from the results of a systematic, scientific investigation) [send me a citation early, if you want to check appropriateness
  • if you pull a frequency statistic, you must look at the research that lead to that stat directly (in other words, you must read the actual study; find out HOW they systematically gathered that evidence)
  • If you aren't sure where to begin, there are some potential sources for research studies in this area in your text).

7) Provide a brief summary of what the authors did and what they found,ANDapply that work and explain, in depth, howthis evidence supports your argument.

  • What was/were the research question(s)? How did they go about answering that question? What were the variables they tested and how? Who were their participants? What were the main results, and what did they conclude from them? [Hopefully, if you are a Psych Major, you recognize that these answers will be in the Intro, Method, Results, and Discussion sections, respectively].
  • After summarizing, you need to apply the information from your article directly and substantively to your overall argument. In other words, how does what the researchers did/found support your pro or con argument?

Seminar part 2

1) INITIAL POST: make your argument either PRO or CON regarding the electronic device while driving ban. Postas a reply tothe appropriate thread that I started. Make sure your initial post provides EVIDENCE to support your argument.

2) CHALLENGE: go over to the opposite thread (e.g. if you argued CON, go to PRO). Read those posts in there, and post a challenge to someone else's argument. Respectfully and politely, say what you disagree with and why.

3) REBUTTAL: go back to your own initial post and see if anyone challenged you. Ifsomeone did, post your rebuttal (again, respectfully and politely) to further support yourINITIALargument. If no one did, then finda challenge posted to someone else's INITIAL argument, and post your rebuttal there, to further support that Initial claim
