Acting on information from a reliable informant, the Secret Service obtains a federal warrant to search a warehouse in Midvale for "counterfeit currency and Records pertaining to the printing and distribution of counterfeit currency". In the search, agents locate and seize $500,000 in counterfeit $20 bills along with personal papers, including a diary, kept by George Belknap, owner of the warehouse. The diary contains incriminating statements painting Belknap as the ringleader of a counterfeit currency operation.

Agents learned that he is the sole proprietor of a printing company, "Andrew Jackson Offset

Printing". They also discovered that he is secretary-treasurer of an unincorporated association known as the "Society for a Return to the Gold Standard" which may be the distribution network for counterfeit currency. The evidence is presented to a grand jury which indicates Belknap for possession of counterfeit currency.

In investigating possible further charges against Belknap and others for making and distributing counterfeit currency, the grand jury issued a subpoena to Belknap for production of the records of "Andrew Jackson Offset Printing " and the "Society for a Return to the Gold Standard". Belknap resists, asserting the privilege against self-incrimination. He also moves to suppress the personal diary seized in the initial search of the warehouse, asserting that its use against him would violate privilege.
