Activity 3: Elephants in Zoos Research with humans and other animals suggests that walking benefits physical health. Because of these ndings, it has been suggested that walking is important to elephant welfare, and that zoo elephant exhibits should be designed to allow for more walking. This study used ahklets equipped with GPS data loggers to measure outdoor daily walking distance/day (in kilometers) in 56 adult female elephants housed in 30 North American zoos. There were 33 African elephants and 23 Asian elephants Note: 1 mile equals 1.609 kilometers.
