1. Security agencies may operate for profit or not-for-profit. Aside from a focus on monetary earnings what are two differences between for-profit and not-for-profit agencies? What are two similarities shared by for-profit and non-profit agencies?
2. The structure of an organization is related to how much autonomy, or power to self-govern, workers have within that organization. Describe several of the characteristics of formal organizations. How do these characteristics affect the amount of autonomy possessed by rank and file employees in these organizations?Describe several of the characteristics of informal organizations. How do these characteristics affect the amount of autonomy possessed by rank and file employees in these organizations?
3. What is the difference between the closed-systems and open-systems views of organizations? Is it realistic to ever consider a criminal justice organization completely closed? Explain your answer and provide an example to illustrate your argument.
4. The bureaucratic form was supposed to be high effective and highly efficient yet the term "bureaucracy" is now associated with inefficiency and poor performance. What are several of the characteristics of the bureaucratic form?How did these same characteristics intended to produce efficiency result in something very inefficient?
5. Services can be grouped into one of three categories according to the degree and type of bundling with goods. What are these three different categories of services? For each category, provide an example that illustrates the concept.
6. Services are said to be produced and consumed simultaneously. What does this mean? What challenges does this feature of services present for criminal justice agencies seeking to provide quality services? Provide an example of a possible problem in service delivery to illustrate your point.
7. It might be argued that technology can only have positive effects on the criminal justice system. Yet, it is also possible for technology to have negative or unintended effects. Identify three different technological advances over the past 30 years. For each, provide an example of how the technology has improved the criminal justice system and an example of how the technology has created challenges.
8. Tasks in the workplace are interdependent and often a source of conflict. What is task interdependence? When does it occur? Describe two examples of task interdependence as it might occur in a police department.
9. Assume you are the chief of police in a local police department and you want to shape the organization's culture. What is organizational culture? If employees do indeed learn about values, beliefs, and behavior from watching supervisors, what are some specific things you, as the chief, can do to set an example for your subordinates?
10. Research has identified five different conflict management strategies derived from a two-by-two matrix. List and briefly describe these five different conflict management strategies.
11. Compare and contrast Alderfer's Existence-Relatedness-Growth (ERG) theory to Maslow's hierarchy of needs. What are some of the similarities and differences in how needs are grouped and how individuals progress as needs are satisfied or frustrated?
12. List and describe three leadership theories.
13. Transformational leaders are said to use a variety of methods to inspire subordinates to perform at higher levels. According to this approach, what can leaders do to inspire workers?
