Adrian, a Year 11 student, is driving to the supermarket to buy food when his car starts to lose power. He stops at the local mechanic to have the car inspected. The mechanic, Bob, is a family friend who agrees with Adrian to fix the car for a reduced price of $250. Bob and Adrian agree that the payment must be made within one month.

After fixing the car, Bob tells Adrian about an apprenticeship that he is offering to students.

Bob hands Adriana written apprenticeship contract which contains all of the terms of the agreement. Under the contract, Adrianwould be paid $15 an hour to work 15 hours a week over a 4-year period, during which time he would receive valuable training and hands-on experience. The contract prohibits Adrianfrom working for other local mechanic businesses within a 25km radius for 2 years, when the apprenticeship comes to an end, for whatever reason.

After considering Bob's proposal, Adrian says that it would just take too much time away from his studies at school. Bob responds, "Look... within the first year of working for me, I'll even pay for a 2-week automotive repairs training course at the Institute, which costs $2,200." Understanding the benefit of the part-time work experience and the added training, Adrianand Bob sign the original contract.

After a year of work, Bob has still not paid for Adrian's course, despite constant reminders from Adrian and his father. When questioned by Adrian, Bob says this is due to financial reasons and also because Adrian has not yet paid him for the $250 for the work done on Adrian's car.

Adrian comes to you for advice. He wants to know whether he can quit his apprenticeship and start work at another automotive mechanic located 15km from Bob's business. He also wants to know whether he is obliged to pay Bob the $250 for the work done on his car and whether Bob must pay for him to complete the training course.
