Advertsing, as an economic influence and a cultural force in public life, began after the Civil War ended in 1865. The reason is because the nation's economy turned away from agrarianism and slave-holding and turned toward competitive, free enterprise capitalism (which is what we have today). However, in the early 1950s, advertisers realized that they must change the way advertising is done in order to sell products, especially those advertised on television.
