After completing the diagnostic quizzes for Units 9 and 10, I realize that I need some additional guidance in some of these areas. I thought I would have done better, but I clearly need to devote more study time to some of these topics.
In Study Unit 9, my overall score was a 75%. My individual scores were 67%, 50%, and 86% for subunits 9.1 Basis, 9.2 Depreciation and Amortization, and 9.3 Capital Gains and Losses, respectively. I was extremely disappointed in my score in the depreciation module. I felt going in that I had a much better grasp on this than I did. Capital Gains and Losses, selling stock, etc. is one area of tax preparation I have always loved, so I felt I had a pretty good understanding of how the cost basis is determined and what to report as gains or losses based upon the stock's selling price.
Study Unit 10 wasn't a lot better, with an overall score of 70%. My individual scores were 75%, 75%, 75%, 50%, and 75% for subunits 10.1 Related Party Sales, 10.2 Installment Sales, 10.3 Nonrecognition Transactions, 10.4 Business Property Recharacterization, and 10.5 Gift Tax, respectively. I have filed a few gift tax returns over the years, so I felt I understood this topic a little more than the others. All of the other topics were very new to me.
Clearly, I need to devote more study time to all of these topics. There is so much more I need to learn and understand. My goal moving forward is to rewatch the tutorial videos, take additional notes on formulas and calculations outlined in the videos, create study sessions, and read and review each topic again.
