Although she has ten years of sports reporting experience for theWashington Post, theTimesrejects her and hires Bud Stallins. Bud played high school football, but worked as a gourmet cook until he began working last year as a sports reporter for theColfax Couriernewspaper. TheTimeshas never hired a woman sports editor, although several apparently well-qualified women have applied in the past. The reason theTimesgave for rejecting Murphy is that football-playing experience is a required qualification for the job.
