After reading Chapter 1 in Kouzes & Posner (2016), it is noticeably clear to me that there are many myths about leadership talent, position, strength, self-reliance, and that leadership does not come naturally to individual. These five myths create barriers to progress and growth by developing the idea that leaders are born naturally and constrained by only a select set of privileged people. "Are leaders born or made" (Kouzes, Posner 2016). However, leadership is not innate or genetical but a skill that can be developed and nurtured through experience and ongoing learning. Through my personal and professional experience, I learnt that leadership is not genetic. Anyone can learn, nurture, and develop leadership skills constantly through practice, experience, and professional learning. Among these myths, the idea of self-reliance truly creates misunderstanding for what true leadership means. This myth implies that leaders should be independent and self-reliant. This can inhibit learning to lead as it discourages collaboration and teamwork.
