After reading the Joint Statement on Delegation, It really gave me more insight to delegating to my aid or other employees when I charge. There are many things I can do to Improve my delegation skills. One is to make sure they are properly educated or skilled to be able to complete the task they have been given. One area I work in the aids are trained and educated on proper foley removal, but another area I work in they are only trained and skilled at in and out catheterization of a patient. So knowing what their skill level is, is very important to being able to delegate properly. Another way is to make use they have the time to complete the task. They have a job to do just as I do. They get busy and have a lot of their plate as well. If they are "drowning" so to speak, I would not need to add more to them. Honestly, I should be helping them get their job caught up if possible not make it harder. Also looking at "Is this something that really needs to be delegated". Know they are educated to do the skill and have the time but is it really something I need to assess and handle myself. A lot of times patients and family member have a lot of questions about anything going on, so these is something they are able to answer. Knowing they will have questions that I should answer then I should be the one to complete the task. When training a new nurse properly educating them on delegation is one way of to help improve others skills as well. Also if seeing another nurse not properly delegating , then that would be a time to educated them as well.
