If you do not have the text, please read Eccles and Barber's article here:
Student Council, Volunteering, Basketball, or Marching Band: What Kind of Extracurricular Involvement Matters?
In their research on 10th graders' responses to questions about their leisure time and peer-groups, Eccles and Barber identified five types of constructive leisure activities that adolescents participate in most while in high school.
Through an online search, select three articles that discuss how a particular high school has made the decision to place more emphasis on one of these five extracurricular activities than the others. Identify schools that have sacrificed one extracurricular activity in order to give more support to another.
Develop a summary of each of the three articles you have selectedto Post in theUnit4 Discussionfor your classmates to review.Be sure to include the "link" or website for each of your articles, so that your classmates may go straight to the Internet to read the article in order to prepare their responses to you. This will also serve as a "Webliography" for our class for this subject area.
For example: Have students involved in academic clubs and teams been required to pay their own way to competitions while the football team travels in coach buses and stays in hotels before competitions? Or have student-athletes been asked to "pay to play" so that more funding could be allocated to the performing arts in a school?
I have completed the grading of your Unit 4: Discussion - our Webliography related to high school sports programs.
I was thrilled at the amount of "discussing" going on in our Discussion! This was truly a great example of how you all can learn from and with each other in an online environment!
For future Webliography assignments, just keep in mind that you will want to always follow the guidelines set up in the assignment which will include writing a summaryof the articles you researched and shared.And...just like in every assignment in college, grad school, or your job, you must properly cite all of your references.I liked the idea of including the "links" to your Webliographies, but we MUST include the entire reference in order to "give credit where credit is due" in our professional work.
Always be sure to proofread and to read and respond to two of your classmates' Posts too!
Let's keep these Discussions and learning going strong - all semester long! (Bonus points for me for rhyming!Ha!)
Any questions, just ask!

This work explored the importance of organized sport activities in children and adolescents to young adult sports and fitness. The data comes from the Michigan review of adolescent transitions. The study comprises over 600 respondents from 3 waves of 12, 17 and 25 years of age. Participation in children's and youth sports was a major predictor of young adults' participation in athletics and physical activities.
1. The bulk of sociological studies into patterns of youth behavior focuses on extracurricular activities of students. This study has reported the connection between youth and adult education extracurricular activities, employment and earnings, also despite legislation on social classification.
2. Work in leisure studies has taken a somewhat different direction. Resting enjoyment requires dedication and passion in sport, success and leadership, while not demanding. Overnight is a fun experience. Adolescents are often thought to have greater benefits than relaxed entertainment in combination with positive leisure, since positive entertainment offers the following opportunities:
(a) the development and practice in different situations of special social , physical and intellectual skills which are useful
(b) for the protection and the development of a community organization
3. The fact that extracurricular activity has been associated with a reduction of school dropout opportunities , particularly during school years and high-risk young people, has been shown to have a positive impact on organized activities. Mahoney also showed a link to lower rates of crime. Additionally , young people who earn a significant number of adult approvals have lower rates of alcohol use than their unimpaired peers. In comparison to other school events, including government students and academic clubs, athletics have been related to a lower probability of school losses and higher rates of engagement in college.
