After reviewing the material that aids in defining American literature from a socio-cultural and historical context, really reflect on what is it to be American?
In addition, what is literature --- is literature always in the form of a novel or other long forms of writing? Is literature prose, poetry, short stories, journalistic writing, blogging, vlogging, oral, folktales, Black noir, etc.?
Why is the study of literature important --- yet alone, American literature? What can we learn from studying and reading literature?
Based on the second video in the “What is American Literature” forum, what do you recommend is the best way to study literature (i.e. from an analytical, thematic, or historical approach)?
In this critical discussion, I ask that you think beyond the obvious and keep an open mind as we explore the multiple perspectives and issues on what it is to be American and what is literature. Post one (1) 500 word response (minimum --- you may expand beyond the minimum) in essay form that answers all of the questions, with at least three (3) literary sources to support your explanations as examples.
**NOTE: Be certain to use MLA format and style, use spell-check, proofread, and revise before submitting your response as a regular WORD attachment (doc or docx only --- MACs are good too).
