After unsuccessfully administering various drugs, as well as using counseling and behavior modification, Dr. Jones, a psychologist resorts to giving "Drug R" to Laura, a hyperactive five-year-old who is violent toward others and self-destructive. Laura's behavior becomes manageable once the dosage is adjusted and then kept on this drug for ten years.

As an adult, she is diagnosed with severe, life-threatening liver damage. Her current doctor traces the liver condition back to Laura's ongoing usage of "Drug R". Long-term studies indicate that "Drug R" can cause liver damage, especially in children who have had protracted exposure to the drug. These studies were not available when Laura was given the medication.
