After viewing a video on the subject, I learned that plea bargaining has resulted in a remarkable 96% decrease in cases that proceed to trial. However, while this process has benefits, it also has a significant drawback: innocent individuals may plead guilty to avoid facing a jury trial. Studies indicate that a percentage, though unknown, of innocent individuals take plea deals to avoid the uncertainty of a jury trial. This is problematic because a trial by jury is intended to uncover the truth and administer a just sentence if the defendant is found guilty. Sadly, innocent individuals may feel apprehensive about the jury trial process due to the possibility of an unfavorable outcome. From my perspective, this is an inherently unfair system. As the video highlighted, historically, only about 20% of people would opt for a plea deal. Today, however, this figure has skyrocketed to over 90%. This shift indicates a broken system that needs serious reconsideration. Despite the potential drawbacks, I believe that jury trials, though infrequent, are more equitable, albeit more costly and time-consuming to organize.
