After watching the film "Just Mercy" and in looking at the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, as well as the Canadian Humans Rights Act, list:
- The violations you saw in the movie"Just Mercy",
- Where those violations are protected in Canada,
- If they seem to be violations but you cannot find them in the Act or the Charter, why should they be violations of peoples' human rights?
Please create a table describing the violations you saw in the movie and what Section of the Charter would protect someone against that violation
EXAMPLE:
Describe the violations you saw in the movie | What Section of the Charter would protect someone against the violation |
Do you think that there are any human or civil rights violations in the film which are not protected in Canadian law? If so, compose about the scene or event you feel is not just or fair, and describe why you think it should be illegal and people should be protected against it.
While the film itself is not Canadian, it provides important lessons in regards to civil rights and their abuses. The challenges involved in fighting to defend peoples' civil rights can often be long and arduous (difficult) processes, as we see in the film. This is why it is so important to defend and fight to ensure that civil rights are respected and protected in Canadian law. In Canada, human rights are protected by federal, provincial and territorial laws. Canada's human rights laws stem from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The first two articles are about equality and freedom from discrimination, the foundation of the Canadian Human Rights Act.
The Canadian Human Rights Act, created in 1977, is designed to ensure equality of opportunity. It prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, age, sex and a variety of other categories.
