While the film itself is not Canadian, it provides important lessons in regards to civil rights and their abuses. The challenges involved in fighting to defend peoples' civil rights can often be long and arduous (difficult) processes, as we see in the film. This is why it is so important to defend and fight to ensure that civil rights are respected and protected in Canadian law. In Canada, human rights are protected by federal, provincial and territorial laws. Canada's human rights laws stem from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The first two articles are about equality and freedom from discrimination, the foundation of the Canadian Human Rights Act.

The Canadian Human Rights Act, created in 1977, is designed to ensure equality of opportunity. It prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, age, sex and a variety of other categories.
