After you have read chapter 3 (culture), you should be able to discuss cultural differences. Watch the following video and then answer the questions that are set up for debate. This discussion should also help you prepare a little bit for the exam as you need to focus on culture and how it impacts business. The video was done long ago, and it is an "extreme" example, but a very good example. It shows a group of young men that came from Sudan (escaping violence and social unrest in their country) to America. They are presented with a different culture as they try to adapt. Culture shock is definitively present. As you watch the video, think about the concepts that you read about in chapter 3 (elements of culture, cross cultural comparisons; culture and business). Think about "their" culture, the American culture, the aspects that they need to adjust as they come into a new culture. Follow this link to see the video (in YouTube): Cultural Differences (National Geographic) After watching the video, answer the following 5 questions: Question #1. How would you compare/contrast the culture of the young men from Sudan (in the video) to the U.S. culture? Comment on what dimensions from the frameworks in the textbook (i.e. Hofstede's dimensions) you see in the video. Question #2. Sometimes the role of marketing is to educate the consumers in regards to products that are new to that market/segment. Clearly some of the products the young men encountered were new to them. Can you give an example as to how marketing could teach consumers about how to use a new product? Question #3: Do you see any evidence of ethnocentrism in the video? Where? Who? How? Question #4: Have you ever experience "culture shock" while traveling or meeting someone from a different culture. Give an example. If you haven't experienced this, think of an example where cultural differences would be very evident
