A reason that it took so long could be because of the part health care has in our economic spending. The textbook shows that government spending on healthcare has increased from about 6% of national income to almost 20% (313). Other than that, some people are opposed to government involvement in health care because of government inefficiency. I think that it is compelling to think that the government shouldn't have the ability to be able to help people have affordable health care. However, I don't find it surprising the hesitation because of national spending, it is quite a considerable amount of national spending and it will likely keep growing
