AGSC 5060: Statistics for Research Page 2 of 8 Question 2. The technology to make golf balls travel farther has come far since the Scottish invented the game in the 1400s. United States Golf Association (USGA) is a governing body that establishes the specifications for size and weight of the golf balls and also tests regularly the standards of different brands of golf ball. USGA wants to compare the mean distances associated with four different brands of golf ball - A, B, C, and D, when struck with a driver. A completely randomized design is employed, with Iron Byron, the USGA's robotic golfer, using a driver to hit a random sample of 20 balls of each brand in a random sequence. The distance is recorded for each hit, and raw data (response variable - distance travel in meters) were analyzed using R. USGA is interested to compare whether there is any difference in mean distance travel between different brands of golf ball. I used one-way ANOVA to analyze the data (outputs not shown, data from McClave and Sincich 2009). (6 marks) a) State null and alternate hypotheses. (2 marks) b) Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) table is incomplete. Construct the ANOVA table and complete those missing entries. (4 marks) ANOVA Table Dependent Variable: Distance (m) Source Sum of Squares DF Mean Square F Value P > F Model 3 1529.615
