Airplane tickets have gotten pretty spendy and airport security is a real pain. For this reason, I decided to be practical and do the old trick of tying a bunch of balloons to my chair and floating to see my friends in Shanghai. I will keep it at low altitudes so the FAA doesn't send the air force after me. Assume I weight 150 lbs. (yes, this is fiction) and will need a chair to sit in, plus snacks and a PC to watch movies during my flight. Come up with a reasonable estimate for the total weight. You can assume the air conditions (pressure vs. altitude) will be constant over the entire distance. You can further simplify and assume temperature will be constant for both the altitude and duration of the trip. How many helium balloons will I need to float along at 1,000 feet above sea level? You will need to decide what size balloons. Give some thoughts to your assumptions. Will the balloons expand significantly with altitude? If so, does it affect the buoyancy? Is the weight of the rubber in the balloons or strings connecting them to the chair significant? How many balloons do I need to shoot out to land at the lowest possible speed? Can I shoot the balloons out all at once or should I do it gradually as I am landing? If the balloons are inflated with hydrogen instead, how many of the balloons will I need (assuming the same size balloons)?
