Alison is delighted that it is the end of her working year. She has set aside a portion of her weekly wage for the balance of the year in order to take a luxurious two-week holiday, sailing first class on the SS Luxury. Her travel arrangements are set and she is to depart from Sydney on 10 December 2016. On 8 December she receives a call from her sister, Diane, telling her that their older brother, Mark, is in hospital with appendicitis. In shock, Alison rushes to her car and races off to the hospital. Although she drives at the speed limit, distracted by worry, she fails to indicate that she is turning left and is struck by a car from behind. The police report finds that the accident was not her fault, despite her failure to signal. Alison's back is jolted violently in the accident and she suffers severe but non- permanent pain which will take 4 weeks to heal, according to her medical reports. Alison's brother, Mark, has his appendix removed and is on the road to recovery by 10 December. However, Alison is forced to miss her trip on the SS Luxury and becomes exceedingly depressed when she turns on her hospital television to see the marvellous ship set sail. She calls you, her solicitor, stating that she wants every cent back plus an additional $10,000 for her distress. Advise Alison.
