All crimes contain two essential elements 1)actus reusand 2)mens rea. In plain English this means 1) an act (not a thought), and 2) varying degrees of intent. For example an act which causes the death of another person is theactus reus but what intent would cause this act to be manslaughter instead of murder? Why is this such an important distinction?
