All of us are multicultural, we all hold many cultures inside, as well as additional sources of identity. What are your main sources of identity? Think about three main categories of identity:

  • individual characteristics of yourself as a person (e.g., height, coloring, personality, skill strengths...)
  • groups you belong to, either by your life circumstances (e.g., birth citizenship, ethnicity, religion from your family, community you grew up in) or by your own choices and actions (e.g., hobbies, graduate education, sports teams you follow, religion you chose)
  • roles you hold - formal or informal positions you are in, that have specific responsibilities towards other people, e.g., mother, son, boss, employee, engineer

Don't worry about which category a particular source of identity falls into (e.g., "professor" could fit into role, group, or even individual characteristics). The categories are there to help you raise awareness about different aspects of your identity, even ones you may not think about every day.

  • To what extent do you integrate vs separate different elements of your identity? (5)
