All three branches of government (legislative, executive, and judicial) can impact public policy. Which branch do you think has the most effect on public policy? As you decide, here is a reminder on what each branch can do. Congress drafts bills and passes them through the House and Senate. They can also override Supreme Court decisions with additional bills that are passed through Congress or override a Presidential veto with two-thirds vote. Congress also confirms the members of the Presidential cabinet and Supreme Court nominations. The President signs the bill into law or vetoes it, and the President is charged with enforcing the laws that are passed. The President also appoints his or her cabinet and Supreme Court nominees. The Supreme Court can uphold or strike down a law that has been passed. The Supreme Court bases this decision on the Constitution. If the law is consistent with the Constitution, they will uphold the law, and the law will remain in place. If the law goes against the Constitution, they will strike down the law, and the law will no longer be enforced.
