Although it seems that books are slowly losing their popularity, large publishing companies are still making billions of dollars. Vasily is an author who is working full-time for one of such companies. He really likes to write short stories, and he is happy when his writings get published. During a lunch with his old friend, Alex, he started discussing his job: Alex: So, how is your job? Vasily: I really do love writing. I'm passionate about it and I'm good at it! Alex: But are you having a fixed income or is it fluctuating? Vasily: That's the problem, my salary isn't fixed, it is based on how many people purchase books with my stories. Or download them... And that is where it becomes problematic! Online services of publishing companies nowadays have made it incredibly easy for people to have access to books, but they have changed my life dramatically. Alex: What do you mean? Vasily: Well, now almost 90% of people who buy my stories do so through these online services. I mean... Yes, it's cool that I can now easily tell how many people actually purchased my books. Look, through this application on my phone I can even see it "live"! My recent book with funny stories about astronauts is doing quite well-over 400 downloads in less than a month! Alex: Wow, that's great! Vasily: It is, indeed, but far from what I wish it was... This type of instant feedback reinforces my self-esteem, you know? I somehow feel that I can write more... and better! But, at the same time, all publishing companies, including mine, place books in accordance with the popularity of the authors in the past. You see? I can put in months of effort in writing a new book with cool stories, but if it's not popular, it will be even harder to make a decent living from my next publication. Alex: That seems quite demoralizing! Vasily: Unfortunately, that's the reality... If you only knew how many of my workers have decided to leave their jobs! It will maybe sound crazy to you, but some of my ex-colleagues make, on average, more money than me working as waiters in a bar close-by! Alex: That's horrible! And, I imagine, there is a huge disparity then between authors, right? Famous ones can put almost no effort, and their names will still appear on the first page of online services that you mentioned! Vasily: You are absolutely right! Sometimes I read the books of these "famous" colleagues, and I'm like: "What in the world is that piece of...?!" And then I look at their download ratings: over 300,000 in less than a week! Alex: That's crazy! The business model of these publishing companies seems immoral, right? They don't write anything, they just make books available, and... boom, they make millions. Vasily: Yeah... Even more, actually. My company's profit was over a billion last year... So, in a nutshell, I love my art. I love writing. And I know that I can write really interesting stories. But, hey, it seems like high quality does not translate to lots of money in the modern world...
