Amazon distribution center As seen in the articles and news, it is clear to see Amazon's distribution centers are flawed. The organizational behavior, design, and culture at Amazon is clear to be "relentless." Working conditions are terrible, and Amazon has gotten away with most of it. Starting with organizational behavior, most workers were scared to speak up to the area manager. He would taunt the employees and scare them into feeling guilty enough to work for Amazon. The work is hard, and it is clear to see the work environment in these fulfillment centers is not for the faint of heart. The design is unclean and unorganized. Scheduling problems and issues with managers can be easily solved with nothing by emotional empathy. Another question is why is the quota of the amount of packages constantly going up? At the end of the day they are still a human so it concerns me why an employee feels like a robot while they are at work. In the same way, culture at Amazon fulfillment centers have the same explanation. It is simple. There is no culture. The employees are treated as a number, and the managers have no respect or an interpersonal relationship with their employees like most workplaces do have. As a leader at an Amazon distribution center, there are changes I would make. For starters, I would set up the warehouse in a way where standing and moving around is to a minimum. Some of these tasks do not have to be done standing up. For example, scanning packages. It is understandable that some tasks do have to be done standing up, however, it is common logic to preserve one's energy during work and physical labor especially. Another complaint from reviews from Quora is that people in the warehouse are treated like a "number." Why is that? Everyone, no matter the workplace, should be treated with respect and treated like they matter. Without these workers, Amazon would not be running. This is why it is important to respect and honor any worker. A review from Quora mentioned that security cameras in fulfillment centers watch a warehouse worker's every move. The lack of trust between the managers and the employees is alarming. In a normal hourly wage job, that is not normal, nor should it be. What also concerns me is why there is even a security guard tracking employees and seeing when they aren't working so they can "get them in trouble." That is a waste of a job, and instead of putting that money into a security guard, they should be putting that money into a higher hourly wage for the physical labor the employees work through. If someone asked me whether or not I would work for Amazon, the answer would be, it depends. It would depend on the position. I personally would not work in a fulfillment center, but I would work in a management position in an office setting. However, part of me would feel as if I should speak up about changes that would need to be made to employees in the fulfillment center, so if I worked for Amazon, that would be of concern to me. In the back of my mind though, working for a big corporation, supporting a multibillionaire who leads in a way where workers have anxiety, constant pain from work, and having literal security guards watching employees every move among other things, is not something I would be happy to support, work for, and dedicate my time to. At the end of the day, Amazon had gotten away with this for so long. It was not until recently that they had increased the minimum wage. Likewise, it is a warehouse. This is the type of work that is expected and there is no sugar coating the work is physical labor that has long hours.
