America's Health Rankings(Links to an external site.) https://www.americashealthrankings.org/

provides a broad array of information on determinants of population health. This site provides healthcare leaders, researchers, and public health professionals with recent data on multiple risks and protective factors for the disease at the national, state, and county levels.

Assignment: Students need to:

  • VisitAmerica's Health Rankings: https://www.americashealthrankings.org
  • Click on Explore to the left => Explore All
  • At the top of the page click on "measures"
  • Select one measure (determinant of health) to explore
  • State your selected measureand answer the following questions.
  1. What was the source of this data?
  2. What are the most and least healthy states based upon this selected factor?
  3. Explain how this measure varies by gender
  4. Explain how this measure varies by age
  5. Explain how this measure varies by race/ethnicity
  6. In what populations is prevalence the highest?
  7. Provide a summary of these variations. In your own words, discuss why you believe these differences exist between the healthiest and least healthy states, gender, age, race/ethnicity, and high prevalence populations.
  • Scroll down to the table at the bottom of the page. You will see three factors pertain specifically to healthcare delivery and access: avoided care due to cost, having a dedicated provider, and being uninsured.
  1. Which populations have a higher rate of avoiding care due to cost? Make a statement concerning why this might be the case or any patterns observed.
  2. Which populations have a lower rate of having a dedicated healthcare provider? Make a statement concerning why this might be the case or any patterns observed.
  3. Which populations have a higher rate of being uninsured? Make a statement concerning why this might be the case or any patterns observed.
  4. Select one of the three measures (avoided care due to cost, having a dedicated provider, or being uninsured). For one population with a high prevalence of that measure look through the different health conditions to see if they also have a higher rate than their comparison groups. For example, people with less than a HS diploma were more likely to avoid care due to cost than those with more education. This group also had a higher rate of diabetes than people with more education. You cannot use this example :)
