As stated frequently, absenteeism is costly to employers and can be demoralizing for the employees who do show up and have to carry the extra work of the absent employee. Many employees are honest and use time only for a true illness. But a survey by the Ethics Resource Center found that more than one-third of employees admitted to calling in sick when they were actually well. Reasons for inventing excuses differ, and so do employers' reactions. Some organizations recognize the employees face genuine role conflicts. Employees might make up work-related excuses such as an "appointment" that is really a need to be available for a child or an elderly parent. Employers can address this issue with broader paid-time-off policies in which employees have a bank of time to use for any personal need, not just illness. Other organizations are addressing the problem of absences with policies that strictly reward perfect attendance and punish unscheduled absences. At Lawson Products, a warehouse and customer service center in Addison, Illinois, employees receive points for being late or absent. After 6 points, they are reprimanded; those with 10 points are suspended without pay; and 12 points can result in firing.
