An advantage of micro/nanosphere lithography is that larger particles serve as masks for the deposition of smaller particles. Miniaturization is built into the process. Consider the pattern of gold islands resulting from an array of close-packed spherical particles each with diameter D. Suppose gold is deposited everywhere between the spheres that is not blocked by the spheres from directly above the array. Calculate and express the distance between adjacent, neighboring corners within each island of the deposited gold in terms of D for a single monolayer of spheres, as depicted in Lecture 19, Slide 10 (bottom left) and Slide 12 (top left).
