An Airbus A400M has been tasked to perform an airdrop. This involves an outbound cruise out' to the drop zone, dropping equipment while airborne, and an inbound cruise in' to the airstrip. It has a wing reference area of 2420 ft and a take-off weight of 238 000 lb. It is powered by four turboprop engines, each with a maximum power output of 11090 hp. Assume propeller efficiency is 89%. (a) The aircraft takes off at 123 kts from a dirt runway at SSL conditions. Calculate the take-off distance required. Assume (CL) max = 2, CD0 = 0.04 and engines operate at maximum power. (b) The aircraft quickly climbs to an altitude of 32 000 ft. During climb, the airspeed is 232 kts, the drag coefficient is 0.027 and the engines operate at 72 % of maximum output. Calculate the rate of climb and the corresponding climb angle. Hint: Neglect the weight change during takeoff and climb, and use an average value for air density. (c) During both cruise segments, the aircraft is operated to maximise range. The aircraft drops 50 000 lb of equipment at the drop zone. Should the airspeed be increased, decreased or maintained for the cruise in segment? Explain with reference to v cruise out/V cruise in and appropriate equations.
