An animal health company is developing an intraruminal device called a continuous release capsule (CRC) for dairy cows. Each CRC is filled with a 15 mm stack of tablets with a spring on one end holding the tablets against a small opening at the opposite end of the CRC. Over time, stomach fluids erode the exposed tablet and medicine is delivered to the animal. The company wants to study the mean payout rate of CRCs made from one of two different kinds of plastic resin (A or B) using one of two types of springs (S1 & S2). They have manufactured several CRCs using each combination of resin and spring type. For comparison, they also obtained several CRCs that are currently on the market. Each CRC has been loaded with placebo tablets identical to those on the market but without the active pharmaceutical ingredient. Eight dairy cows were purchased and each was surgically fitted with a ruminal cannula (a porthole giving access to the animal's "stomach"). One CRC of each type described above was randomly selected and then placed intoeach cow's rumen via the cannula, i.e. all 5 types of CRCare assigned to each cow. Over the course of three months, each CRC was removed from the cow every 7 days, the length of the remaining tablets was measured, and the CRC was replaced into the same animal. A payout rate was then computed for each CRC.
