An essay about what features would you expect to make a country more or less likely to have policies restricting capital flows? How and why do these expectations vary across different types of capital flows?

Some general advice and guidelines:

  • In fairness to your classmates, I will not answer substantive (as opposed to logistical) questions related to the examination topic while the examination is out. If in doubt, ask the question; I will let you know if I feel constrained not to answer.
  • The length limit does not allow for an exhaustive answer to the question. Part of the assignment is deciding what explanatory factors are themostrelevant andmostimportant, and therefore worthy of inclusion in a highly distilled consideration of the issues. An answer that tries to cover everything relating to the topic runs a high risk of being choppy and theoretically underdeveloped. However, too narrow a focus is also a problem: even if your preferred answer relies only on one causal explanation, it is worth suggesting why other potentially significant factors are relatively less germane. Put another way, accuracy is necessary but not sufficient for a good response.
  • If it makes most logical sense in presenting your thoughts and arguments to, say, tackle a point from the last sentence of the question first, you should do so.
  • It's worth paying attention to the rudiments of grammar. Solecisms often produce ambiguity that can read as simple inaccuracy - and, of course, undermine the effectiveness of the presentation.
  • It is wise to provide some sort of citation when using material from the book or lectures. If your interpretation or discussion of something strikes me as questionable, it is very helpful to be able to check it against a reference: partially misinterpreting the book is a smaller flaw than creating a faulty argument from whole cloth (or seeming to).
  • Outside sourcesthose not used in this courseare not expected for this assignment: you should primarily focus on information from the readings and lectures. That said, it is permissible to use outside information. If you do draw on such sources, citations are necessary. Any citation format is acceptable, as long as it provides complete information with which to locate the idea or quotation.
  • Generative AI is acceptable to use, but keep in mind it often goes wildly astray, so you're responsible for what you turn in and it is very, very much in your interest to fact-check and edit any of its output you choose to submit.
