Another question that could be considered discriminatory would be, "Do you practice a religion?" According to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, it is against the law to discriminate someone who is pregnant or plans to get pregnant (EEOC, n.d.-a). The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission also states according to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 it is illegal to discriminate based on an individual's religious beliefs (EEOC, n.d.-b). Asking an individual during an interview what their plans are regarding having children often leads to "stereotypes and assumptions" about a potential employees' commitment to the job. (EEOC, n.d.-a.) Similarly, asking an individual their religious belief could lead an employer to think the member will require extra accommodation, and may therefore negatively perceive them in comparison to another candidate. HR professionals should be aware of discrimination laws before an interview takes place. As well, if they are interviewing with someone else, they should make a point to talk to their fellow interviewer about what is appropriate to ask (Onley, 2024)
