An ongoing source of question and controversy in the criminal court system are the possible advantages that wealthier defendants might have over poorer ones, largely as a result of the fact that the former can pay to hire their own attorneys, whereas the latter must accept the services of court-appointed counsel. There is a common perception that privately retained attorneys are more skilled and dedicated than their publicly appointed counterparts. Let us examine this issue using a sample of property defendants from the JDCC data set. The IV is attorney type and the DV is days to pretrial release, which measures the number of days between arrest and pretrial release for those rape defendants who were released pending trial. (Those who did not make bail or were denied bail are not included.) Using an alpha level of .05, test the null of no difference between means against the alternative that at least one region is significantly different from at least one other. Use all five steps.
