Then close the switch momentarily and observe what the compass does. The compass is pointing in the direction of the magnet field produced by the current in the wire. Write your observations on the direction of the magnetic field in your lab report. 4. Again with the switch open, place the compass on top of the straight wire. Mark on your diagram the direction of the magnetic field on top of and under the wire. 6. Reverse the leads on the battery so the current flows in the opposite direction and observed the direction of the magnetic field on the top of and under the wire when closing the switch. Data Analysis/Conclusion 7. Use right-hand rule #1 to determine the direction of the magnetic field for each case and compare with your measurements. Do they match?
