1. Here is an example of a small farm that needs to diversify in order to remain sustainable. This farm family needs to conduct a SWOT analysis. Read the example and conduct your own SWOT analysis for the Santos Family. Problem The Santos family has operated a farm for over 32 years which is located in Socorro, Oriental Mindoro. Urban and suburban areas are close by where the population are estimated to be 100,000 or more. Tatay Junior, age 50, took over the farm from his father 20 years ago. The farm has 60 cows, 30 wild pigs, 25 goats, homegrown vegetables, and 100 chicken laying eggs. The family withdraws about P20,000 monthly from the farm business for their living expenses. Nanay Celia, 48, is Tatay Junior's wife while Jara, Roby and Susy are their children. Nanay Celia used to work on the farm, but due to health reason she decided to work as a canteen staff to a school nearby for the last 5 years. She earns P15,000 plus SSS and Phil health benefits. To help Tatay Junior, she oversees the finances of the farm. Jara, 23, is a vocational graduate of cookery in TESDA. She also works full-time on the farm, milking the cows to help his family. She's considering to make farming as her occupation, but would like to continue her work in the restaurant. Her brother Roby, 16, is a highschool student who works part-time in the farm during the school year and full-time during the summer vacation. However he is not interested in the family business and would rather attend PUP and study Economics. Susy, 11, is an elementary pupil who shows interest in farming and loves taking care of the animals after school. Lola Mising, 60, is Nanay Celia's mother who are living with them, loves to cook just like her granddaughter Jara. The Santos are considering an alternative farm enterprise because they need additional income to send their children to college and to save for their retirement. The spouses agrees that they want Jara or Susy to manage the farm in the future. This means that, until they retire, the farm may have to support two families (Jara currently has no plans for marriage). They are thinking about expanding the farm to generate additional income but Jara would rather put a restaurant. They realize that changes in the farm may have to occur to satisfy the desires of the next generation and are willing to explore alternative farm enterprises. The family met to determine how each person felt about developing a new enterprise on the farm, and found that Jara and her grandmother are most excited about this idea. After they did an inventory of resources, they concluded that their main, underutilized, physical resources are a small piece of land - about 5 acres currently used to grow extra hay for sale - and a concrete block shed used to store bicycles and patio furniture. Their main, underutilized, marketing resource is the city 38 miles away. The Santos also have good road frontage along a fairly well-traveled highway. She reviewed back issues of culinary and country magazines and spent an entire day walking through the city, visiting stores, restaurants, the downtown area, and malls. Out of 6 ideas that Jara came up with (fruit pies, cheese, salted eggs, lechon, ice cream, and yogurt), the idea that most family members like cheese, which Jara and Lola Mising thought could be sold at a farm-market stand or to the many hotels and restaurants in the city.
