Analyze and discuss the accuracy of the following argument. Production efficiencies abroad have prompted Americans to begin buying all manner of consumer goods (cameras, cars, TV sets, etc.) from Asian countries. Steel producers, auto makers, and farmers among many others have protested the international competition and demanded protection against the huge quantities of imports demanded by American consumers. Among the arguments for protectionist policy is this, if higher productivity and lower wages in Asian countries mean that Asian workers inevitably produce everything more cheaply than American companies, Americans would have no work.
