analyze information:

Social Problem:The social problem of interest identifies the ongoing narrative to prevent suicide, and those protective factors for individuals who have considered but never attempted suicide (J.A. Agnew, courseroom feedback, Weeks 4 and 9).

Qualitative Research Problem:The scholarly community does not know the meaning behind protective factors for individuals who have considered but never attempted suicide.

Qualitative Research Purpose:The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore lived experiences that contribute to protective factors for individuals who have considered but never attempted suicide.

Qualitative Research Question: How do individuals who have considered but never attempted suicide articulate and describe the protective factors they experience?

From the Qualitative Research Methods Matrix (Walden University, n.d.), my research question may be within the phenomenology or heuristic inquiry. Apparently there is still a lot to learn in the subject matter of suicidality as far as the amount of research that has already been published. There are several ways to investigate the protective factors of individuals who considered but never attempted suicide. I could inquire about the study through the psychotherapists who have worked with clients in abnormal psychology. Or, I could also find out about survey questionnaires online or chat groups where individuals who share similar experiences exchange thoughts. There is also the possibility I might be able to interview willing participants who want to discuss their protective factors, choosing to live their lives, against very challenging times they encountered. However that may have to be accomplished in the presence of a licensed psychotherapist because of the vulnerability of the population. The research, alone, is very enriching and the investigators who have studied this topic have been tireless in their efforts to detail the affects of suicide, as a thought, an action, or the aftermath of how it stigmatizes others lives in its wake.

I am not concerned about finding the information that is already there; I am not concerned about the amount of new information yet to be gleaned, a literature review would be very fruitful. A gap in the literature would be detectable. The difficulty is collecting data that creates a narrative about real lives, their suffering, which is very fragile, and would require the utmost respect from any qualitative research novice. There also is plenty of sound documented reports from institutions of mental health.

The development of the idea of the research question consists more in the methods to disseminate it.

Shenton (2004) suggested (h) frequent debriefing sessions between the researcher and his or her superiors, such as a project director or steering group convey insight. The vision of the investigator may be widened as others bring to bear their experiences and perceptions. Shenton believed such collaborative sessions can be used by the researcher to discuss alternative approaches, and others who are responsible for the work in a more supervisory capacity may draw attention to flaws in the proposed course of action. Shenton indicated meetings also provide a sounding board for the investigator to test his or her developing ideas and interpretations, therefore probing from others may help the researcher to recognise "[sic]," his or her own biases and preferences (Shenton, 2004, section h, p. 67).
